From Assumptions to Impact: Jude  is building AI-driven Agritech with Purpose.

“Jude, I wonder why you’re still broke. If I had half your engineering skills, I’d be super loaded.”

🤔A statement that stuck. Spoken by a friend, it made Jude Barnabas Kibwota pause and reflect. After all, he had already built remarkable innovations Smart Farmer, Optimus, Powerwell, Soil Quality One, all designed to transform agriculture through technology.

Yet, something was missing.

Before joining Rootical, Jude admits he was building based on assumptions, often skipping the most crucial step: feedback from the very people his solutions were meant to serve the farmers. His creations were technically brilliant but lacked the deep connection to the real challenges on the ground.

🌱Everything changed when he stepped into the Rootical founder journey.

Discovering the Food System Map

💡At Rootical, Jude was introduced to Food System Mapping, a tool that illuminated gaps, revealed leverage points, and helped him see the bigger picture of agriculture in Uganda. For the first time, he approached his projects with “problem loving”, to build solutions centered on farmers’ real needs.

What followed was a rigorous, step-by-step journey, guided by coaches Ruth Ndwiga and Isaac Muhofa, with their now-famous mantra: “Trust the process!”

  • Problem validation: Understanding the actual challenges farmers face, rather than assuming we know what they care about most.

  • Idea generation: Crafting solutions that directly address those challenges.

  • Prototyping: Iterating multiple versions until the solution fits the farmer, not just the developer’s vision.

“It’s all coming together now, Jude recalls.

The Birth of Intelligent Soil

⚙️The result of this journey is Intelligent Soil, an AI-powered Agritech solution that allows farmers to talk to their soil in multiple languages: English, Acholi, Luganda, Runyankole, Lugbara, Ateso, you name it.

⚙️By combining IoT sensors, cloud data, voice recognition, and AI-powered language libraries, Intelligent Soil removes traditional barriers, from illiteracy to language and soil data interpretation  enabling farmers to make informed decisions with unprecedented ease.Farmers can now ask their soil directly, and understand exactly what it needs:

  • Nutrient deficiencies

  • Soil-borne diseases

  • Crop recommendations

  • Methods to restore soil health for higher and more resilient yields

Impact Beyond Technology

For Jude, Rootical wasn't just a place to build projects, it was a launchpad for purpose-driven innovation. He now creates with the farmer at the center of every decision, transforming technology from an abstract tool into a tangible solution for food systems.

Through Rootical’s mentorship, guidance, and structured approach, Jude turned his ideas into practical, scalable, and regenerative solutions that speak the language of the land – literally and figuratively.

Why this Matters

🤝 Jude’s innovation embodies exactly what Rootical is about: building profitable and impactful businesses that are tech-enabled, not tech-dependent.

🤝 In Uganda, where smallholder farmers form the backbone of food production, solutions like Intelligent Soil can be transformative. By collecting data, analyzing soil health, and communicating actionable advice in local languages, this innovation empowers farmers to optimize yields, fight soil degradation, and make ecosystem-positive farming decisions.
